Spice Things Up with Flooring for Your 20s-Inspired Kitchen

Have you ever considered creating a 20s inspired kitchen? It can be a lot of fun to switch things up with this decade’s colorful design aesthetic. How should you approach the flooring? There are many options as the 20s started an infusion of daring color into kitchen design in addition to black-and-white staples and varied flooring materials. Figure out which type of flooring is best for you and your inspired kitchen:

  • Think Color: The 20s was a landmark time where housewives became the main cooks in the kitchen and were all about making it an enjoyable space for them to work in. Enter color. Women wanted to spice up the appeal of the kitchen and did so by ditching the idea of color as just an accent. Instead, they made it a focal point. You can reflect this in your flooring plan for your 20s inspired kitchen, by making the flooring colorful too. You can use vinyl, tile, or linoleum to lay checkered designs of different colors or lay all one color down. Keep with the time’s popular usage of reds, yellows, greens, oranges, rich tans, ivories, and even browns.
  • Linoleum: Linoleum was extremely popular as a flooring material in the 20s, and if you choose, this would be a great selection. Keep with checkers and patterns that use a lot of rectangular and square shapes. You can use color or you can go with classic black and white, which reflects perfectly the vintage feel.
  • Vinyl: Vinyl is a sometimes overlooked alternative to linoleum and can be just as time-appropriate with the added benefits or durability and wider selection. Vinyl is available in sheets and in tiles. Not only can you use the same sort of black and white checkered look you would get with linoleum, but you can unleash some extra creativity by using dark gray and white vinyl tiles in a subtle marble pattern as a slightly modern spin on the classic 20s style.
  • Tile: Is durability a high priority for you? Consider using tile for your 20s-inspired kitchen flooring. You can create similar patterns as with linoleum and vinyl by laying tiles in a checkerboard layout. You can also vary size and shape with rectangular and square tiles. One design to try is very small tiles, each with a different shade of the same color.
  • Wood: Wood flooring is also a highly durable option and can easily be altered to reflect the 20s vibe. Consider using floor paint to paint your wood floor a color such as red, orange or gray to keep with the vintage theme.
