Pantone’s 2017 Color of the Year & Your Hardwood Floors

Each year, we look forward to hearing what Pantone’s Color of the Year will be. While 2016’s Rose and Quartz provided a soothing sense of order and peace and 2015’s Marsala made an elegant, grounded statement, 2017’s Color of the Year evokes a sense of natural, refreshing revival: Greenery.

About 2017’s Pantone Color of the Year

Each year, Pantone strives to select a shade that reflects the global culture in its mood and attitude. This year, Greenery was chosen for its symbolism of new beginnings, such as when the first days of spring are filled with revived, restored and renewed natural greens.

Illustrative of flourishing foliage and the lushness of the great outdoors, the fortifying attributes of Greenery signals consumers to take a deep breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate.

Greenery is nature’s neutral. The more submerged people are in modern life, the greater their innate craving to immerse themselves in the physical beauty and inherent unity of the natural world. This shift is reflected by the proliferation of all things expressive of Greenery in daily lives through urban planning, architecture, lifestyle and design choices globally. A constant on the periphery, Greenery is now being pulled to the forefront – it is an omnipresent hue around the world.

A life-affirming shade, Greenery is also emblematic of the pursuit of personal passions and vitality.

Pairing Pantone’s Greenery with Your Hardwood Floors

Greenery is a fantastic complement to hardwood flooring! In addition to a pairing seen amongst countless trees in nature, the hue offers homeowners versatility in its diverse color combinations. Pantone even provides 10 different palettes to reference, from neutral and pastel hues to bright and deep shades. In fact, many of them include various forms of gray. As gray flooring continues to be a popular choice for homeowners, consider selecting a color for your floors that will be easy to pair greenery with for the entire year (as well as years to come!).

How can you pair Greenery with your hardwood floors?

  1. Decorate your space with lush plants! In addition to placing a vase of flowers on a side table, consider purchasing a larger pot for a fern or a ficus tree. Just make sure you use a pot that will contain the water so you protect your flooring from water damage!
  2. Pick out a new area rug for 2017. In addition to a solid green rug, keep an eye out for designs and patterns that feature the Greenery color alongside other hues in Pantone’s palette suggestions.
  3. Update your accessories. Adding a new Greenery table runner or a few throw pillows is an easy change to make, but also consider updating your decorative hardware, such as pendant lights, to incorporate this timely hue.
  4. Accent your space. If you really want to be bold, consider incorporating the Greenery color alongside your hardwood floors with an accent wall or curtains. Don’t be afraid to try something new as this natural color will provide a lot of options for you to mix other shades into your decorative design.
