  1. The scientific name for this species is Eucalyptus Saligna. In addition to being known as Sydney Blue Gum, sometimes it’s referred to as Blue Gum, Flooded Gum, Rose Gum or Saligna Gum.
  2. Wood floors made from Sydney Blue Gum range in appearance from light pinks and soft browns to deep, burgundy reds. Although the heartwood is very rich in color, the sapwood hues are much lighter. Over time, hardwood flooring made from this species darkens to a medium brownish-red tone.
  3. This type of hardwood flooring’s grain is straight or slightly interlocked with a coarse texture.
  4. Moderately durable, Sydney Blue Gum comes in at 2023 on the Janka scale. It holds up to traffic and resists most denting.
  5. This wood floors species received its name from its prevalence in Sydney, Australia in addition to the way its bark appears blue sometimes.
  6. Sydney Blue Gum hardwood flooring is available in two grades. Although manufacturers call them varying names, they have the following differences:
    • Select Grade: Offers a wide range of color variation, including deep reds and pinks. This grade also has no knots.
    • #1 Common Grade: Has small knots and pitch pockets, “Small black openings where pitch gathered inside the tree.”
  7. Although this species is not endangered, it is less common due to stricter sustainability regulations.
