Here are four factors to consider when choosing between bamboo flooring and hardwood floors.
- Sustainability. Although there are eco-friendly hardwood flooring options out there, bamboo is a more sustainable choice because it's a renewable resource. This species grows quickly and can be harvested in just 4-8 years without any damage to the roots. In comparison, hardwood takes 70-90 years to be ready for harvest, which also damages the tree permanently.
- Maintenance. Before investing in new floors, most homeowners want to know what sort of maintenance they should expect. Both bamboo and hardwood flooring need similar upkeep: sweeping and dry- or damp-mopping regularly. But it's also important to note that hardwood floors will also need resurfacing and waxing before bamboo does.
- Durability. Durability is key when investing in a product that's meant to last for decades. Hardwood tends to be naturally durable, although depending on the species and grade of wood, bamboo flooring can actually outlast hardwood floors by 25 percent.
