Do you have a section of existing floor you'd like to combine with new hardwood floors? You might want to consider weaving the two types of floor together. Why is this important?
Weaving Hardwood Floors Together
As we've seen time and time again, if you don't weave the new floor in with the existing hardwood floors, you end up with the planks butting up right next to each other; in addition to looking horrible, this makes it very obvious where the old and new floors begin. Instead, you want the new floor to flow with the existing boards so the joints look flawless and cohesive. We've seen many homes that haven't weaved the floor in and it ends up looking like someone was putting puzzle pieces in the wrong spots. In addition to seeing bad butt joints, it creates a cross-seam along the edge of the new and old hardwood floors. Ultimately, when the process is done correctly, it should be hard to tell where the old floor ends and the new begins.
Why not just install the same type of wood right next to the existing floor? Because hardwood floors change with the amount of light they're exposed to over the years, using the same species and finish doesn't guarantee an exact match. By weaving the old and new floors together, the change is more gradual and much harder to detect.
