Do you have a preference for exotics? You might want to consider Wenge hardwood flooring. Pronounced “WHEN-gii” or “WHEN-ghay,” this wood is imported from Central and West Africa and comes in very dark shades. Keep reading for the details!
5 Facts About Wenge Hardwood Flooring
- Wenge wood comes from the Millettia laurentii tree in Central and West African countries like Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, Mozambique, Tanzania and Zaire.
- When it’s cut the right way, Wenge wood flooring can be very visually striking, alternating dark brown and almost black hues. Depending on the type of finish you use, sometimes it appears completely black. In fact, this species can even serve as a substitute for ebony.
- Wenge wood is straight-grained with a rough texture and naturally low luster.
- Wenge hardwood flooring is moderately dense (1630 on the Janka scale), making it decently resistant to wear.
- Because of its porous nature, Wenge tends to dampen sound, which can have its benefits in large, loud spaces.
