How to Hire a Flooring Contractor: What to Look For

August 30, 2017 by admin

You are ready to move forward and install new flooring in your home, but how do you find the right contractor? Which is the best? How do you keep from getting ripped off? Picking a good contractor can make the difference between a pleasant and a miserable experience.

9 Questions to Ask Your Potential Flooring Contractor

Ask a potential flooring contractor these questions before working with them:

  1. Do you have a valid CA state contractor’s license? In addition to finding the license number, make sure the name matches the person coming to your home or the owner of the business. To view our license, click here.
  2. Does the contractor have workers’ compensation? Check the CA Contractors State License Board (CSLB) website to see if they have any infractions you need to know about to make an informed decision.
  3. Does your contractor have a valid CSLB card with them? If they don’t have it, get their name or the business owner’s name to make sure they have a bond.
  1. How high is the contractor’s liability insurance? San Jose Hardwood Floors has a $2 million liability insurance policy. Insurance certificate is presented upon request.
  2. Do you have references I can talk to? Make sure they have 5-10 references you can call, and then follow through and contact them!
  3. Is it possible to tour a current job location? Butch Kirk, President of San Jose Hardwood Floors, will be glad to meet you on a current job site and give you a tour of the work in progress.
  4. Why is water/moisture wood’s worst enemy? How do you protect against it when installing new floors? San Jose Hardwood Floors takes special precautions against moisture damage when installing floors. Feel free to contact us for details about how we do this!
  5. Are you an authorized installer for the product line I want in my home? If a contractor is not authorized to install a particular product, your warranty may be invalid, and repairs may be costly. San Jose Hardwood Floors is an authorized installer for ALL the products we carry, including Legends, Kahrs, Junckers, Robbins, Bruce, Hartco, Andersen Floors, Harris Tarkett, Mannington, Pergo, Witex, Wilsonart and others.
  6. Do you know how to work with other contractors simultaneously? San Jose Hardwood Floors has established relationships and worked with most prominent contractors and sub-contractors in the Bay Area.
